Asian America in Brief History by Anna Jyi

COURSE: Asian American Studies/English 462: Asian American Graphic Novels and Comics

MEDIUM: Infographic, Poster

DESCRIPTION:
Our course focused on how Asian American authors paved the way through the graphic novel and comic sphere of literature with their memoirs, stories, and art. This is a digital poster featuring a timeline I arranged with all of the novels we read in a chronological and fashionable way by order of which the history of each story took place throughout Asian American history spanning from the early 1800s until modern day. It features artwork and illustrations from the novels as well as examples that drew back to each story and how they related to an important historical moment in time.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
I was inspired by the foundation and presence of Asian American history, activism, and survival in America portrayed through the illustrations of each novel. Since we were given the creative freedom to explore any medium for our final project, I knew at the foundation I wanted to make something impactful and eye-catching. I chose the medium of digital art because I feel the most free and confident about using it as a tool to relate the message that I was hoping to convey through this project.
