Atlas of Irish Traditional Music by Atlas Guo

MEDIUM: Interactive Map, Poster, Data Visualization

DESCRIPTION:
This is an interactive web map that connects traditional tunes with Irish places. Built from public data linking tune names and place names, it includes a standard mode showing the overall distribution of tunes with proportional symbols, along with three additional visualization modes that highlight tune types in different ways. Users can also explore tune details and preview melodies with several instrument sounds commonly used in Irish traditional music. The map was also designed with mobile compatibility.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
I created this project out of my own growing interest in Irish traditional music through playing the tin whistle in local sessions. I was struck by how many tune names are connected to Irish places, and I wanted to turn that observation into a cartographic form that could support exploration and discovery. My goal was to create a public-interest map that would be useful and engaging for Irish music lovers, while also inviting feedback and possible collaboration from musicians and scholars who know the tradition more deeply. This project builds on public data originally compiled by Benjamin Becquet from The Session and OpenStreetMap, and was expanded by me from a cartographic perspective with his permission.
