Unravel by Daniel Chu

COURSE: ART 448: Coding for Graphic Design

MEDIUM: Video

DESCRIPTION:
I constructed this piece using Kevin Stadler’s Processing Sound library. The melody waves and drum pulses were both constructed using overlapping bezier curves. A filter is applied by modifying pixels after the shapes have been rendered, creating the dark ring for the record and heavily modifying the curves’ shape and color.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
Unravel is my take on transforming music into a two dimensional medium. I chose 孤独の発明 by toe for it’s compositional complexity as well its emotional neutrality. My piece combines the appearance and audio sensation of a rotating record. The two halves together depict the melody’s flow as it unstrings and restrings itself into the company of the drums.
