DESCRIPTION:
Scenic Yosemite National Park is a reference map designed to convey both the scenic view and geographic structure of Yosemite National Park. Using a west-to-east oblique perspective, it highlights iconic landmarks such as Half Dome and El Capitan while also situating Yosemite Valley within the broader Sierra Nevada landscape. The map combines multi-scale hillshading, Swiss-style shaded relief, hypsometric tinting, remote-sensing textures, a locator map, and simulated graticules to support both immersive viewing and geographic interpretation.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
I created this map to convey Yosemite as both a recognizable place and a deeply felt landscape. After visiting Yosemite Valley in July 2025, I wanted the map to reflect not only the park’s geographic structure but also the visual experience of encountering it. I wanted the design to echo selected elements of the National Park Service cartographic tradition, while developing a more immersive scenic reference image of my own. This map is intended for viewers interested in Yosemite, national parks, mountain scenery, and detailed reference maps. This map won the Base and Reference Map category in the Wisconsin Land Information Association 2026 Map Contest and received Honorable Mention in the Arthur Robinson Print Map Award of the 53rd Annual CaGIS Map Design Competition.
