COURSE: Library & Information Sciences 999 – Independent Study

MEDIUM: Digital Imagery

What follows are examples of illustrated domestic novels authored by American women in the nineteenth century.

The images were selected from the holdings of the Cairns Collection of Twentieth Century American Women Writers in the University of Wisconsin’s Special Collections. Presented chronologically, they reveal an interesting glimpse into the genre of domestic fiction — the prevailing ideals and themes addressed by the authors, the types of scenes chosen for representation, the décor and dress of the time, and the overarching unity of it all.
