Error: No Signal by Leah Morley

COURSE: Art 356: Coding for Graphic Design

MEDIUM: Video/Animation, Code Art, Audio, Data Visualization

DESCRIPTION:
Error: No Signal is a graphic design piece which is coded to visually respond to music played: may (light)_remix by SHOMOSE.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
Error: No Signal is an exploration of the intersection of code and graphic design, building on a familiar color palette of a traditional tv test card, to create something responsive and alive with something traditionally stagnant. I took the CMYK and RGB color palette from the tv error message and morphed it into a circular format in Processing, building it up and adding bezier lines and black squares to simulate a glitching screen. I coded it to respond to may (light)_remix by SHOMOSE, electronic music which includes sounds of tech- nological glitching and a rhythmic tone reminiscent of a heartbeat. This creates a sense of life from the screen as it interacts with the music, launching the piece into a space between the machine it comes from and the living people who watch it. The code was played through 2 LED projectors with speakers on a loop.
