DESCRIPTION:
This entry brings together three LEGO-style maps of Madison, Wisconsin. The first reimagines the city’s Bus Rapid Transit system through colored tile lines representing transit lines and stations. The second transforms the essential geography of Madison’s official city flag into a 3D LEGO composition with the capitol dome, capitol building, isthmus, and two lakes raised to different heights, together with typographic city name and 3D model of the capitol building. The third presents Madison through a Christmas theme, with seasonal colors, decorative details, and a playful “Merry Isthmus” pun while still preserving the city’s real shape and structure.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
I designed these fun maps to explore how a city can be interpreted through multiple LEGO cartographic languages while remaining clearly recognizable as Madison. Together, the works treat Madison not just as a mappable place, but as a city that can be read through networks, symbols, and playful cultural themes. The trilogy is intended for viewers interested in Madison, LEGO-inspired design, and creative approaches to geographic representation.
