Library Mall Redesign by Austin Sheehan

COURSE: Landscape Architecture 261

MEDIUM: Map, Poster, Landscape Architecture, Photography

DESCRIPTION:
My redesign of Library Mall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus aims to enhance the site’s most essential functions, creating a space that better serves its users while honoring its historical significance. The new design prioritizes improved pedestrian flow, dedicated areas for gathering and activism, and spaces that foster meaningful interactions for both students and the Madison community. By reimagining the site’s layout, I have addressed previous points of conflict and adopted a design style incorporating more historical linear forms with modern elements. This approach helps integrate the surrounding historical architecture with the modern needs of the university and the Madison community.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
As a Landscape Architecture student at UW-Madison, I am encouraged to think beyond traditional design, approaching projects as systems thinkers. Through our work, we have the opportunity to practice environmental stewardship, connect communities, honor history, and create spaces that positively impact people’s daily lives. For my independent project, I chose Library Mall as my site due to its significance to both the campus and the Madison community. I wanted to challenge myself by using in-depth research to inform and shape my final design concept.
