COURSE: Art 102: Two-Dimensional Design
MEDIUM: Digital Collage
DESCRIPTION:
The works shown are two digital alterations of a physical collage made out of images from various art magazines. While both of the compositions are different, both are created from the same images. The first composition utilizes numerous filters to create a chaotic and busy atmosphere. The second composition blends the images together to create a more clear and distinct focus point, yet it still retains some of its original chaotic tone. Together, they create two perspectives of a world that is falling apart: a realization and a hopeful prayer.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
‘It’s the End of the World As We Know It’ was created to reflect on today’s world. Everything seems like it is falling apart. So much is happening at once, and due to the age of instant communication, people are constantly bombarded with stories of the horrors, casualties, and destruction or imminent destruction of our world. It seems that humanity is doomed. However, while things are dire, there is still hope that humanity can overcome it. Amidst the chaos in the world, there are those who can find peace. Are things actually as bad as they seem, or are people denying the harsh reality of the situation?
As an artist, I enjoy creating pieces with contradictions within them. Irony and juxtaposition are some of my favorite methods of doing this. I want the viewer to reflect on certain aspects of the world that we live in today. Are systems actually beneficial or efficient? Do certain tools in one’s life help or hinder them? These are some of the questions I ask myself when creating pieces like this.
